Holy Cow & Wow!!!

How About That Camp Street?

184 Camp Street-ps.jpg

182/184 Camp Street -- 5 Unit Building

What about 182/184 Camp St. selling for $850,000. Holy cow. More condos? It's a beautiful building. I hope it's taken care of.

I have not seen the deed myself, but I am quite intriqued by the situation. Bankers & Tradesman is usually reliable with their information: they presumably report newly recorded deeds, and the Providence Journal's Saturday Real Estate section reprints information from B & T.

Could it be that adjacent properties were combined/merged and the transaction was recorded as one sale at 182/184 at the sum of $850,000?

I thought the price a bit high myself but was ready to attribute it to an out-of-state buyer filled with that irrational exuburance we've heard so much about. Now it makes more sense.

It would be interesting to see what the effect would be were the new owners to convert these buildings to high-end condos. Although still a bit seedy, this section of Camp Street is ready for a revival.

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I think that the house at 182-184 Camp sold for $425,000 AND the house next door (186 Camp) sold for $425,000 at the same closing (4/1/05) so it looked like just the house on 182 Camp went for the whole amount of $850,000.
But $425,000 each in nothing to sniff at either.

Unfortunately it is true. If you speak to some of the GCCC longer members they will tell you the same. Some of the longer working cops will tell it too. However with the new members of the GCCC and longer members leadership we can change this mindset.

Ugh...I certainly hope that isn't true! What an awful attitude.

Drugs on Camp and Woodbine are nothing new. If Camp complains they move to Woodbine, if Woodbine complains they come back to Camp.

I have been told that the cops are told not to arrest anyone, for if they arrest someone it will upset the other drug dealers, and then you could have a riot on your hands.

A lot of drug activity close to that area, I'd say midway between Camp and North Main. They were identified as nuisance houses at the Crime Watch meeting, but those were definitely not involved in whatever took place because business was thriving over the weekend. The usual suspect has moved business further down Camp, it appears, but occasionally there are transactions closer to me. One right outside my house last night, as a matter of fact. There were others hanging out on the corner of Woodbine and Camp this weekend (upper Woodbine, which is the first that I've seen). I was a little worried, but they quickly disappeared. One person came complete with a pit bull that was trained for attack (I worked as a vet tech for many years...I can tell). Before that it had been so quiet for weeks...

It was lower Woodbine, Jen, just one house up from Steele, I think. Tell us about the increased activity you've seen lately.

Was it upper or lower Woodbine? This is the first I've heard of it. I was gardening outside most of the day and was home that night; I would be surprised if I missed it. There was a party late Friday night, complete with fireworks, but I don't think that had anything to do with it. If anything, I've seen more of what I suspect to be criminal activity over the past few days than I have in awhile.

An exciting police raid took place on Woodbine on Friday with swat teams with drawn guns and bullet-proof vests, state and city police, and a frentic chase. That is all I heard. Does anyone have any more info?

Speaking of ("HOLY COW & WOW!!!") holy cow & wow, we just passed a huge milestone: GCCC just passed the half century mark for paid members, with paid members 51 & 52. We are in uncharted territory. Thanks Kourtney O', for being a woman of your word. Thanks Dan.

Now, who have you recruitedly lately, Oh membership?

Thanks for the link! I have always taken an interest in historic homes and enjoyed reading about the beautiful ones in this area.

This is the listing for the house in RIHPC's "Providence: A Citywide Survey of Historic Resources"

184 Allen P. Young House (1880)
A large, 2 1/2-story center-hall-plan Italianate house with a low hip roof, 3-bay facade, and small entrance porch with paneled piers and iron cresting. Young was a foreman at the Providence Tool Company.

You can find more information about Mount Hope history at preservemounthope.org, a site we're developing to encourage RIHPC to designate more areas in Mt Hope for historic tax credits.

Sold. Listed in yesterday's real estate transactions in the Journal.

Did it sell for $850,000 or is it just listed at that?
